![]() and really this is just a game about dumb fun, eating other animals, battling your way up the food chain, completing quests and finding collectables to progress through the story… And again this is just a dumb fun game. Maneater a swimmingly good time Maneater is an 8 hour long action rpg where you play as a shark, to prevent spoilers ill just say this is a Maneater a swimmingly good time Maneater is an 8 hour long action rpg where you play as a shark, to prevent spoilers ill just say this is a revenge story… A revenge story that is told through a reality tv style… here you swim the swamps and oceans on your quest to become a mega shark. I hope the spiritual successors to Maneater iron out some of the flaws. If that doesn't instantly sound incredibly appealing: Let this one slide. If you think goofing around as a hyperviolent, mutant shark in a campy port town is going to scratch that itch you never knew you had: Go for it. Seeing how it has barely any replay value, however, you could wonder if 2-3 days of shark gameplay are worth the (admittedly not very high) pricetag. In a way, this saves the experience because you'll finish the game before the narration and novelty of being a shark run stale and leave you with an empty husk of an RPG. I took 2 days to max out and finish the main storyline (while still focussing on side activities). The developers must've been pressed for time, because I can't imagine someone looking at this content and thinking it's a job well done. To make things worse, the specific enemy you have to kill often repeats several times in a row. ![]() There's a bunch of collectibles and every quest is basically "go here and kill 10 of this". In addition, all sins of open world quest design are present. Some mutations make combat especially trivial and it doesn't get much better when fighting shark hunters or bosses, who are essentially just (reskinned) regular enemies. Half of your time is spent wrestling the camera in order to track your prey because you don't get a proper lock-on system, the other half is spent mashing bite because that's really all the strategy you need. Admittedly it's difficult to develop a good system when you're limited to underwater fish combat, but it could've been a lot better than it ended up being. First and foremost: Combat is boring and janky. ![]() Maneater drops the ball where it really counts, however: the gameplay. Aided by some funny quips and excellent voice acting, it's what carries the game. The game strikes a perfect "so-bad-it's-good" tone for an unapologetically fun, zany and hyperviolent experience. If that sounds campy: That's because it is. You play as a mutating shark on a quest for vengeance as she chomps her way through a port town in order to bulk up and take on the famous shark hunter that took down her mother. I really want to love Maneater as it clearly has a lot of heart and does some things very well.
